On Wednesday, September 27 & Thursday, September 28, 11 Native Second Language students from St. Hilary School and St. Edward School Grade 6 and Grade 8 could join the Fall Harvest at Red Rock Indian Band.

The students received moosehide and scraping teachings from Janelle Wawia and Bess Legarde. They also got to enjoy a beautiful day of outdoor learning and exploring. Students realized all of the hard work and dedication involved with harvesting a moose. They connected these teachings to what the hide is used for once it is completed, like moccasins, mitts, clothing, rope and more. Chi-miigwech to Lauren Michelle, who helped the schools organize the visits.

The students learning at the RRIB Fall Harvest went beyond moosehide tanning teachings. They watched RRIB community members work together to process moose meat for Elders. They were taught skinning techniques by a local trapper who brought in a beaver, and they joined in on the fun and got to show off their teachings. Ben Nicol, a St. Edward Catholic School Gr. 7 student, won both competitions for best bull and cow call. The students were so connected with this learning, and we look forward to continuing to participate in community events when possible.
